Friday afternoons, 12-3pm
Sept 5 - October 24 (8 classes)
First class (Sept 5) is FREE! Come try it out and see if it’s for you!
$195
If you've ever thought to try watercolors or pick up where you left off, and wish for personal attention as you paint, this class for you. At the outset we will pursue an understanding of materials and tools in order to develop strokes and washes. Using simple shapes and techniques to learn how the brush loads and carries water and pigments, we'll be feeling the difference of "less is more" and "less is enough". Students will be able to complete a number of studies and paintings in this eight-week series.
Years ago I did a thesis on watercolor. I then traveled for a year outside the US. The images I brought home were watercolor only, no camera. This was my medium for decades. Recently my watercolor work has been on silk as well as on cold-pressed Arches paper. I may include a silk demo to introduce silk superflow, an exciting surface used over millennia.
Yes, watercolor painting can be simple, fun, and elegant. Quality ingredients make all the difference. Please opt for Daniel Smith, Sennelier, Winsor & Newton Pro, Schminke. One can start with a handful of select pigments and brushes, plus Arches or Baohong "Artist" cold-pressed papers. Beginners receive a supplies guide.
Welcome aboard--see you as summer gives way to autumn's richly hued magnificence!

“If it gives pleasure or comfort, it is Art; if it instructs and enlightens, it is Art; if it confuses, is clever or clarifies, it is Art. The platform or delivery system, be it literary, culinary, educational, 2D, 3D, digital, electronic, FaceBook, childbirth, or of the plastic “arts” is the only thing that differentiates one from the other. Still, each, nonetheless, is to be respected and regarded as valuable vehicles of experience or existence.”
Carl Heyward is NEA Fellow and grant recipient, former MFA instructor at SF Academy of Art University, arts writer and founder of Global Art Project, a mixed-media collaborative cooperative with a membership in 12 countries. He has exhibited at Room Art Gallery, Mill Valley, The Fourth Wall Gallery in Oakland, CA, artist-in-residence at The Schools of The Sacred Heart at The Flood Mansion, San Francisco, and continues to exhibit internationally: Kranz, Slovenia; Mazatlan, Mexico; Venice, Italy; and Ghent, Belgium, in 2017-2019. His work is in collections held by SF-MOMA, NY-MOMA, Yale University Art Library, the National Gallery of Australia, Wellsely Art Library and the Brooklyn Museum. He is associated with Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery, CA; 10dence Gallery, Holland, Galerie Sobo Bade, Senegal and Gallerie Renee Marie, CA, East Village Art View Gallery, NYC
